When a pupil cannot tell you in words that a lesson made sense, how do you know you got it right?
In this KS3 class, you learn to read the answer in other ways. A pupil looks straight at the cup they want instead of the one you offered. Someone reaches for the next step of a routine before you prompt them. If you already teach like this, watching closely and building on small steps, this SLD Teacher role in a South East London SEND school could suit you well.
Is your current role giving you time to teach?
A lot of SEN Teachers I speak to describe the same week. EHCP targets sit in one place, and lesson plans in another, and the evenings go on trying to make them match. The support staff in their class change from term to term, so they start over every September. If that sounds familiar, it is worth asking whether your school is giving you what you need to teach well.
How this school does things
Here, EHCP targets, planning and progress tracking are joined up. The evidence you gather in a lesson feeds straight into each child's plan. Your class is small, and you lead its team of Teaching Assistants yourself, with a weekly team meeting you run. The school trains every member of staff to use its specialist spaces, and Teachers there talk about the level of development and support they receive.
About the school and the pupils
I am working with a friendly specialist secondary school in South East London for young people with SLD, PMLD and autism (ASC). The building was designed around sensory learning, with easy access to outdoor space. Music and art are part of school life, and water-based activities feature in the weekly timetable.
Your KS3 class are young people with severe learning difficulties, and some are also autistic. They communicate in different ways, through words, gestures, and alternative communication, and many need support with personal care. Moving into secondary is a big change for them. Familiar adults matter, so the school wants a Teacher who plans to stay for the long term.
The school is an easy journey from Lambeth and Lewisham, and on-site staff parking is available.
