When a teenager in crisis looks for the one adult they trust, is it you, even though your job title says something else?
Plenty of people do the hardest part of SEMH teaching without QTS. They build trust with young people who have stopped expecting anything from adults. This SEMH Teacher role in Richmond lets you lead a nurture class of your own, with no QTS needed.
About the school and the pupils
I am currently working with an SEMH specialist school in Richmond upon Thames. Every pupil has an EHCP, and many come with histories of trauma or disrupted attachment. Some also have ASC or ADHD. For most of them, feeling safe with an adult has to come before any formal learning.
You will lead a nurture class of KS3 and KS4 pupils, with up to eight in the room and other adults alongside you. Lessons follow each pupil’s developmental stage. You also join the small team around each young person, so you never plan alone.
The school is commutable from Kingston and Teddington.
Stepping up to lead a class
If you have spent years supporting lessons, you already know what works with these young people. This role puts you at the front of the room. You plan the sessions, set the tone and decide how to respond when a pupil is struggling. The school gives SEND training from day one, and the team around each pupil means you always have colleagues to talk things through with.
What you will do
- Lead lessons for a small nurture class, adapted to each pupil’s stage
- Use routine and calm boundaries to help pupils settle and engage
- Support pupils through dysregulation with a trauma-informed approach
- Share what you notice with the team around each pupil
- Help pupils work towards their EHC Plan targets, one small step at a time
About you
- A genuine interest in SEMH and in teenagers who find school hard
- Solid classroom teaching experience with young people who have SEMH, ASC or complex needs
- Confidence leading a group, from planning a session to managing the room
- A working understanding of trauma-informed practice
- An interest in teaching as a long-term career
Starting in January
If you need to give notice in your current role, apply early. That leaves time to visit the school and agree on a start date before January.
