What does an 11-year-old need when secondary school has felt too big, too loud and too fast since the first week of Year 7?
Usually, it is one adult who stays. One face at the door each morning. One Teacher who notices the hood up, the skipped breakfast or the shrug at the door, and adjusts the day before it goes wrong.
I am working with a friendly SEMH special school in Richmond, South West London, that needs an SEMH Nurture Teacher to be that adult for its KS3 nurture class from January 2027. The pupils have Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, and many also have Autism (ASC) or ADHD.
Think about your own week
If you teach 5 or 6 groups a day, you know your pupils' names, targets and data. You rarely get the time to learn what a bad night looks like on their face.
In a nurture class, you get that time. You teach the same small group for most of the day. By half-term, you know who needs a job to do as they walk in, who reads better standing up, and who only opens up at the end of the day. You see their progress up close, week by week.
If you trained in primary, you already teach this way: one class, one Teacher, relationships first. If you trained in secondary, this is your chance to teach the whole child.
About the school
Every pupil has an EHCP. Classes are small, and you will have Teaching Assistants in the room with you, so you plan and teach as a team. The school gives emotional safety and academic progress the same weight. Properly settling a pupil before a lesson starts counts as good teaching here.
The school is easy to reach from Kingston, Hounslow, Feltham, Sunbury and Staines-upon-Thames.
About the children
Many have experienced trauma, attachment difficulties or anxiety. Some arrive in Year 7 having already decided school is not for them. Some test every boundary for weeks. Others go quiet and hope nobody notices. The nurture class gives them a smaller, steadier start, with clear steps into KS4 learning once they are ready.
What you will do as a Nurture Teacher
- Lead a small KS3 nurture class as their main Teacher, with pastoral responsibility for each pupil's learning, emotional well-being, and physical needs
- Plan and deliver a creative, differentiated curriculum built around each pupil's EHCP outcomes
- Direct the Teaching Assistants in your classroom so every adult works to one consistent plan
- Work closely with families, therapists, health professionals and support staff around each pupil
- Help pupils build the regulation skills and confidence they need to move into KS4 learning
Who should apply
- Qualified Teachers with QTS and at least two years' teaching experience
- Teachers with experience of pupils with SEND, including Autism/ASC and SEMH or behaviour that challenges
- Teachers with a sound working knowledge of SEND legislation, EHCPs and curriculum adaptation
- Primary-trained Teachers who want to bring a class-based model into a secondary SEMH setting
- Teachers with SEND leadership or curriculum development experience who want to shape a nurture provision (desirable, not essential)
Why now
If you are in a teaching post now, the date that matters is 31 October. Most maintained school and academy contracts ask for your resignation by then if you want to leave at Christmas. A conversation this month gives you time to visit, ask questions and decide properly.
What you can expect
The rate of £200 to £267 PAYE per day follows MPS1 to MPS6 Outer London, around £39,000 to £52,000 a year. You get weekly pay, with no umbrella company and no hidden deductions. This is a long-term role with a genuine route to a permanent contract, and you get free CPD to keep your SEND practice up to date.
