Occupational Therapist | Specialist Education Setting | West London
£170–£260 per day PAYE | Full Time | Term Time Only | Temp to Perm
Your work could help a young person understand themselves, manage their environment and take their next step towards independence.
Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting for an Occupational Therapist to join a specialist education setting supporting young people with a range of additional needs, including SEMH, autism and other complex SEND.
This is an opportunity for an OT who wants to take their clinical knowledge beyond traditional therapy sessions and see it applied throughout a young person's everyday education.
The opportunity
Within a specialist school environment, occupational therapy can have a direct impact on how a young person experiences their entire school day.
You will work alongside teaching and support staff to understand individual barriers and develop practical approaches that enable students to participate more successfully in learning, relationships and everyday activities.
The role will involve a mixture of assessment, intervention, consultation and staff support, giving you the opportunity to influence both individual students and the wider environment around them.
What you will be doing
You will support students to develop the skills and strategies they need to participate more independently in school and beyond.
Your responsibilities will include:
-
Carrying out occupational therapy assessments
-
Identifying functional, sensory and environmental barriers
-
Developing personalised intervention programmes
-
Supporting sensory regulation and emotional wellbeing
-
Helping students develop independence and life skills
-
Advising staff on practical adaptations and strategies
-
Supporting students to engage more effectively in learning
-
Contributing to EHCP outcomes and reviews
-
Recording, monitoring and evaluating student progress
-
Working closely with families and other professionals
-
Contributing to a wider multidisciplinary approach to student support
About the students
You will work with young people aged 11–19 who may present with a combination of SEMH, autism, ADHD, communication difficulties, sensory needs and other additional needs.
No two students will require exactly the same approach.
You will therefore need to be comfortable adapting your clinical thinking, building trust and finding practical solutions that work for each individual.
What makes this role different?
This isn't simply a role where students are taken out of lessons for an isolated therapy session.
The aim is to make occupational therapy meaningful within the young person's wider educational experience.
You could be helping a student understand their sensory needs, supporting a young person to develop greater independence, advising staff on environmental adaptations or finding new ways for a student to engage with learning.
Your recommendations can become part of the student's everyday routine.
Who would suit this role?
We are looking for an Occupational Therapist who is:
-
HCPC registered
-
Passionate about supporting children and young people
-
Interested in working within SEND and specialist education
-
Confident carrying out assessments and developing intervention plans
-
Able to build positive relationships with young people
-
Comfortable working with complex and sometimes challenging presentations
-
Able to communicate clinical recommendations clearly to non-clinical colleagues
-
Practical, patient and creative in their approach
-
Comfortable working collaboratively as part of a wider team
Previous experience in paediatrics, SEND, SEMH, autism or education would be advantageous, but we are also interested in OTs who can demonstrate the right transferable skills and approach.
The impact you can make
For some young people, becoming more independent starts with understanding what is making everyday activities difficult.
Occupational therapy can help turn those challenges into achievable steps.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to see how your assessments, recommendations and interventions translate into real changes in a young person's confidence, participation and independence.
