Occupational Therapist – SEND & SEMH | Hillingdon

Location: Hillingdon, West London
Salary: £170–£260 per day PAYE
Job Type: Full time, term time only, temp to perm
Start Date: September 2026

About the role

What if the right support could help a young person become more independent, more confident and better able to manage everyday challenges?

For some young people, progress is about much more than what happens in a classroom. It can be about managing sensory needs, developing independence or finding practical ways to engage with learning.

A specialist SEND school in Hillingdon is looking for an Occupational Therapist to join its team and support young people with a range of additional needs, including SEMH and Autism.

This is an opportunity to bring your clinical expertise into an education setting and make a meaningful difference to pupils' everyday lives.

The setting

The school supports young people aged 11–19 with SEND, including Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs and Autism, alongside other communication, behavioural and developmental needs.

The approach is holistic, with education and therapeutic support working together to help pupils overcome barriers, develop independence and prepare for their next steps.

The role

As an Occupational Therapist, you will:

  • Complete OT assessments across a varied SEND caseload

  • Identify barriers affecting participation, independence and learning

  • Develop individualised therapy programmes and practical strategies

  • Support sensory, functional, developmental and emotional needs

  • Work with education staff to embed therapeutic strategies into the school day

  • Provide advice and guidance to staff

  • Contribute to EHCP assessments, reviews and reports

  • Monitor progress and adapt interventions

  • Work collaboratively with families and other professionals

You will have the opportunity to make your clinical recommendations practical and relevant to pupils' everyday school experience.

Who we are looking for

This role would suit an Occupational Therapist with experience working with children and young people who is looking to develop within a specialist SEND environment.

You will ideally have:

  • HCPC registration

  • Paediatric, SEND, school-based or relevant clinical experience

  • Strong assessment and intervention skills

  • Experience supporting young people with complex needs

  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills

  • A collaborative and person-centred approach

  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff

Experience with Autism, SEMH, sensory needs or communication difficulties would be particularly beneficial.

Why this role matters

For some young people, everyday activities that others take for granted can present significant barriers.

Occupational therapy can help break those challenges down into achievable steps — giving pupils practical strategies to manage their environment, participate in learning and become more independent.

Your work can also give teachers and support staff the tools they need to provide more consistent support throughout the school day.
