Outreach SEMH Teacher
Barking & Dagenham
Permanent | September Start

For many teachers, there comes a point where something feels misaligned. The focus on outcomes and data can start to outweigh the time needed to build real connection with the young people who need it most.

This role offers a different way forward.

A specialist outreach provision in East London is seeking a committed teacher to join on a permanent basis, supporting young people who are currently unable to access mainstream education. These learners require consistency, patience, and a relationship-led approach to help rebuild trust in learning.

The pupils you will work with present with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and in some cases Autism and additional complex needs. Many have experienced disrupted education, trauma, or prolonged periods out of school. The provision is designed to meet them where they are and support meaningful progress over time.

Teaching here is highly flexible and looks very different to a traditional classroom setting. Learning takes place in community-based environments, with small group delivery that allows you to focus on individual needs and build strong, trusting relationships.

You will be fully supported by a team of therapeutic mentors, working collaboratively to plan and deliver engaging, tailored sessions that prioritise emotional regulation, engagement, and re-entry into education.

For those moving from mainstream education, this setting offers a significant but rewarding shift in practice. You will receive high-quality therapeutic training focused on trauma-informed approaches, behaviour understanding, and emotional wellbeing, helping you develop your practice while making a tangible impact.

The most rewarding aspect of this role is seeing gradual but meaningful change—supporting young people who may initially struggle to engage, and helping them take steps towards education, training, or employment with renewed confidence.

This is a full-time role, term-time only, and would suit a teacher who values flexibility, creativity, and a strong relational approach to education. A genuine interest in therapeutic practice and supporting vulnerable learners is essential.

If you are looking for a role where you can focus on individual impact and be part of a young person’s journey back into education, this could be a highly rewarding next step.
