Are you a qualified teacher who always ends up with the pupils who find school the hardest? Would you like a role where teaching those young people is the whole job?
I am currently working with a well-established SEN provision that organises outreach provision in South West London. They are looking for an Outreach SEN Teacher with QTS to teach young people with SEND and SEMH needs who are not currently attending school.
This is a very different way of teaching. There is no class of 30 and no bell. You plan for one young person or a small group, and you teach them in a place where they feel safe to learn. For many of these pupils, you will be the first teacher they have trusted in a long time. That is what makes this role so rewarding.
About the young people
The pupils are primary and secondary age. Many have SEMH needs, anxiety or emotionally based school avoidance. Some also have ASC or ADHD, and some have been through difficult experiences outside school. Lessons take place at home, in community spaces such as local libraries, or at outreach centres. You will travel across both boroughs and have the support of an experienced team who know these young people well.
What to Expect as an Outreach SEN Teacher
- Plan and deliver personalised lessons, mainly in English and Maths
- Teach 1:1 and small groups in homes, community settings and outreach centres
- Build positive relationships so pupils feel ready to learn again
- Work with families and the wider team around each young person
- Track progress and contribute to individual learning plans
About you
- A genuine interest in SEMH and young people who have struggled in school
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), primary or secondary
- Experience teaching pupils with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs, whether in a special school, PRU, alternative provision or a mainstream inclusion role
- Calm, patient and flexible, even when the plan changes on the day
- Organised and confident in managing your own timetable
