How many children sitting in a classroom right now are working twice as hard as their classmates just to hold a pencil steady?

I am currently recruiting a Paediatric Occupational Therapist to work across local primary and secondary schools in Barnet, North West London. You support children and young people with SEND, many with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN), alongside sensory processing and motor coordination difficulties.

If your current role means assessing a child once, writing a report and moving on to the next referral, this works differently. You return to the same schools throughout the year. You see whether the sloped writing board made it into the classroom, and you talk to the Teaching Assistant who uses your strategies every day.

Where You Will Work

Your week is split across a group of schools in Barnet. Pupils range from upper primary to sixth form, roughly ages 9 to 19, and many carry low confidence and real barriers to learning. One week, you might help a Year 6 pupil manage scissors before secondary transfer. Next, you might work with a Year 10 student on ways to stay calm before an exam. You plan with Teachers, Speech and language therapists, art therapists, and support staff, so therapy fits into the school day instead of competing with it.

What You Will Do

  • Assess pupils’ sensory, motor and functional needs across your schools, and write clear, practical reports
  • Deliver individual and small group sessions on handwriting, fine motor skills and sensory regulation
  • Set up classroom strategies with Teachers and Teaching Assistants, and review them on each visit
  • Support older pupils with life skills and independence as they move towards adulthood
  • Contribute to EHC Plan reviews and share progress with families and the wider therapy team

About You

  • A genuine interest in SEND and in helping children feel settled enough to learn
  • HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist (essential)
  • Experience with children who have sensory or motor needs, autism, or communication difficulties
  • A calm, confident way of working alongside Teachers, therapists and support staff
  • Newly qualified Occupational Therapists with paediatric placement experience are welcome to apply

What You Get

  • A permanent, full-time role working term time plus five extra weeks in the school holidays
  • Salary set against NHS Band 5 to Band 6 in Outer London, so you can compare it with your current band
  • Clinical supervision and CPD to grow your paediatric practice
  • A weekly free lunch, well-being allowance and healthcare cashback plan
  • A caseload you see regularly, so you watch the progress happen

Schools in Barnet are already planning for the spring term, and interviews are being arranged as applications come in. Apply now, and you could be settled in your schools by January.
