What changes for a child with Autism when the adult working on their communication is still there next term, and the term after?

I am working with a SEN school in Surrey that is seeking a Speech and Language Therapist to join its therapy team on a permanent contract. Band 5 and Band 6 therapists are both welcome. That includes newly qualified therapists looking for their first school-based post.

If you cover several schools, you will know how hard it is to see a child for a block of sessions and then hand them back. In this role, your whole caseload is in one school. You get to know each pupil well enough to notice the small changes, and you are still there when those changes start to show in class.

About the school and the children

The school supports primary and secondary-aged pupils with Autism, ADHD, and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. Every pupil has an Education, Health and Care Plan. Many arrive anxious and unsure of themselves. Some have had very little consistent speech and language therapy before.

Each class is a small group with a Teacher and a Learning Support Assistant. Therapists work in the classroom with them, so a strategy you suggest can be tried in that same lesson. Your advice also feeds directly into each child’s EHCP targets.

The therapy team is established, and leaders want their therapists’ views on how speech and language support works across the school. If you have ideas about how SLT should work in a school, you can put them forward here.

What you will do

  • Assess pupils’ speech, language and communication needs
  • Plan and deliver 1:1 and small group therapy, in class and in separate sessions
  • Write therapy advice and targets for EHCP reviews
  • Coach Teachers and LSAs to use communication strategies throughout the day
  • Help decide how speech and language therapy develops across the school

About you

  • An interest in how Autism, ADHD and SEMH shape the way children communicate
  • A recognised Speech and Language Therapy qualification and HCPC registration (essential)
  • For Band 6, experience with children who have Autism or ADHD
  • Band 5 and newly qualified therapists who want a school-based caseload are welcome
  • Paediatric experience from the NHS or independent practice counts, and so do your training placements

Support if you are newly qualified

You will have clinical supervision from an experienced Speech and Language Therapist while you complete your NQP competencies. Starting in one school gives you time to build confidence with a caseload you know well.

Where it is

The school is in Surrey and is commutable from Guildford, Reigate, Redhill, Crawley, and Horsham.
