Tower Hamlets | Full-Time | September Start | Interviews from Week Commencing 10th August
Do you believe sport can change lives?
We're working with an exceptional specialist secondary school in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets to recruit a passionate PE Teaching Assistant / Sports Coach to join their dedicated team from September.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a background in sports coaching, physical education, youth work or behaviour support who wants to make a genuine difference to the lives of young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.
The school is an all-boys specialist secondary setting where relationships, consistency and positive role models are at the heart of everything they do. Staff use physical activity not only to develop sporting ability but also to improve emotional wellbeing, confidence, resilience and self-regulation.
Located in Tower Hamlets, the school benefits from excellent transport links via the District Line, DLR and Elizabeth Line, making it easily accessible from across London.
The Role
Working alongside the Lead PE Teacher, you'll use sport and physical activity to inspire, motivate and engage students who may have struggled in traditional classroom environments.
Whether it's football, basketball, boxing, fitness training, outdoor education or team-building activities, you'll use your enthusiasm and coaching skills to help young people build confidence, regulate their emotions and develop essential life skills.
This is an active, rewarding role where no two days are the same. You'll become a trusted mentor, helping students discover their strengths both on and off the sports field.
Your Responsibilities
- Support the delivery of engaging PE lessons, sports sessions and outdoor learning activities.
- Lead 1:1 and small-group sports interventions designed to improve confidence, emotional regulation and physical wellbeing.
- Use physical activity as a positive outlet to help students manage stress, anxiety and heightened emotions.
- Coach and motivate students through a range of sports including football, fitness, boxing, athletics, team games and outdoor challenges.
- Adapt activities to ensure every student can participate, regardless of ability, confidence or additional needs.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students through encouragement, consistency and shared sporting interests.
- Support students to manage competition, frustration and teamwork using calm, trauma-informed approaches.
- Supervise changing rooms, transitions and outdoor activities while maintaining high standards of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
- Ensure sports equipment and facilities are safe, organised and maintained in line with health and safety procedures.
- Record safeguarding concerns, wellbeing observations and student progress in accordance with school policies.
We're Looking For Someone Who
- Has experience working with children or young people with SEMH, SEND, Autism, ADHD or challenging behaviour.
- Has experience coaching or leading sports, fitness sessions or physical activities.
- Has worked within an SEMH school, PRU, Alternative Provision, youth setting or similar environment, or has transferable experience supporting young people.
- Understands how physical activity can support emotional regulation, mental health and confidence.
- Has knowledge of inclusive coaching, adapted sports or supporting young people with additional needs.
- Is energetic, resilient and passionate about helping young people succeed.
- Can remain calm, consistent and positive in challenging situations.
- Has excellent communication skills and enjoys building meaningful relationships with young people.
- Is a positive role model who leads by example both on and off the pitch.
What Makes This Opportunity Special?
This role is about much more than teaching sport.
You'll help young people develop resilience, self-belief, teamwork and emotional regulation through physical activity. Many students arrive with negative experiences of education, and sport often becomes the key to rebuilding their confidence, improving attendance and creating positive relationships.
You'll be joining a highly supportive staff team that believes every student deserves the opportunity to thrive, and you'll play an important role in helping them achieve exactly that.
Whether your background is in sports coaching, football coaching, personal training, youth work, martial arts, outdoor education or PE, this is an opportunity to use your skills to create a lasting impact.
