PMLD / SLD Teacher - Specialist SEND School
M1–M6 Outer London
Full-time | Barnet
For pupils with profound and multiple learning disabilities or severe learning difficulties, progress can look very different from a traditional classroom.
A new communication response. Greater independence with a familiar routine. Increased engagement with a sensory activity. A pupil expressing a preference more clearly than they could before.
We are working with a specialist SEND setting in Barnet looking for a PMLD / SLD Teacher who understands the importance of recognising and building on those individual steps of progress.
This is a role for a teacher who enjoys highly personalised education and wants the freedom to think beyond a conventional academic curriculum.
The role
You will lead a class of pupils with complex learning needs, creating a structured and engaging environment where communication, independence, wellbeing and meaningful learning are at the centre of the school day.
Your responsibilities will include:
-
Planning and delivering highly differentiated lessons
-
Teaching pupils with PMLD, SLD and complex SEND
-
Developing individual learning opportunities around each pupil's needs
-
Supporting communication, interaction and independence
-
Using sensory and practical approaches to make learning accessible
-
Assessing progress against appropriate individual outcomes
-
Leading and deploying classroom support staff effectively
-
Working closely with families and the wider multidisciplinary team
-
Contributing to EHCP targets and pupil reviews
-
Creating a calm, predictable and inclusive classroom environment
What are we looking for?
You may already be an experienced SEND Teacher, or you may be a mainstream teacher ready to move into a more specialist environment.
What matters is your ability to adapt your teaching and recognise that success will look different for every pupil.
Essential
-
QTS or an appropriate recognised teaching qualification
-
Experience teaching children or young people
-
Strong classroom leadership
-
Ability to differentiate learning significantly
-
A patient, reflective and pupil-centred approach
-
Confidence working collaboratively with support staff and other professionals
Desirable
-
Previous PMLD or SLD teaching experience
-
Experience within a special school
-
Knowledge of complex communication needs
-
Experience contributing towards EHCP outcomes
-
Understanding of sensory approaches to learning
Why consider this role?
This is an opportunity to teach in an environment where you can focus closely on the individual pupil rather than simply delivering content to a class.
You will have the chance to build detailed knowledge of your pupils, celebrate meaningful progress and work alongside experienced SEND professionals who understand the importance of consistency and individualised support.
For a mainstream teacher considering SEND, it can also provide the opportunity to develop a completely different set of teaching skills and broaden your understanding of inclusive education.
