PMLD Teacher – Complex Needs & Specialist Education

Barnet, North London | Full-time

Teaching pupils with profound and multiple learning disabilities requires a very different understanding of progress.

A response to a familiar voice, independently communicating a preference, tolerating a new sensory experience or developing greater physical independence can all represent significant achievements.

Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting a PMLD Teacher for a specialist SEND setting in Barnet.

This role would suit a teacher who understands that successful complex needs teaching is highly individualised, collaborative and built around each pupil's communication, physical, sensory and learning profile.

The role

You will lead a class of pupils with profound and complex learning needs, supported by a team of experienced Teaching Assistants and specialist professionals.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Planning highly personalised and differentiated learning

  • Creating meaningful learning opportunities around individual developmental levels

  • Supporting pupils with profound and multiple learning disabilities

  • Developing communication, engagement and independence

  • Incorporating sensory approaches into teaching

  • Working closely with Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists and other professionals

  • Using EHCP outcomes to inform planning and assessment

  • Leading and directing classroom support staff

  • Monitoring progress using appropriate non-traditional measures

  • Creating a safe, structured and engaging classroom environment

  • Supporting pupils with physical and personal care needs alongside the wider team where required

Who are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status or an appropriate recognised teaching qualification

  • Experience teaching pupils with SEND

  • Confidence differentiating learning for pupils working significantly below age-related expectations

  • Strong classroom leadership

  • A patient, reflective and flexible approach

  • Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team

Particularly desirable:

  • PMLD experience

  • SLD experience

  • Complex needs experience

  • Autism experience

  • Sensory curriculum experience

  • AAC or alternative communication knowledge

  • Previous special school experience

What makes a strong PMLD Teacher?

It is someone who can recognise progress that might be invisible to someone unfamiliar with complex needs education.

You will need to observe carefully, adapt constantly and understand that meaningful learning does not always involve exercise books or traditional academic outcomes.

You will also need to lead the adults around each pupil effectively. In a PMLD classroom, strong teamwork is essential.

Why consider this role?

This is an opportunity to teach in an environment where education is genuinely built around the individual pupil.

You will have the chance to develop communication, independence, engagement and quality of life alongside academic learning, while working closely with professionals from different disciplines.

If you are an experienced SEND Teacher looking to specialise further in PMLD and complex needs, I would be very interested in speaking with you.
