PMLD Teacher – Communication & Complex Learning Needs

Camden, North London | Full-time

What does progress look like when a pupil does not communicate verbally, is working significantly below age-related expectations or requires substantial support throughout their day?

A strong PMLD Teacher knows there is no single answer.

Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting a PMLD Teacher for a specialist SEND setting in Camden, supporting pupils with profound and complex learning needs.

This is a role for a teacher who can look beyond conventional measures of attainment and create learning that is purposeful, accessible and genuinely meaningful for each individual pupil.

Your classroom

Your pupils may require highly individualised support with communication, sensory engagement, physical development and independence.

You will lead a well-supported classroom team and work closely with other SEND professionals to ensure teaching reflects the needs of each pupil.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Planning and delivering personalised learning

  • Teaching pupils with PMLD and complex learning needs

  • Developing early communication and interaction

  • Using sensory and engagement-based approaches

  • Supporting pupils who use non-verbal or alternative communication

  • Embedding individual EHCP outcomes into everyday learning

  • Working collaboratively with therapy professionals

  • Leading Teaching Assistants effectively within the classroom

  • Monitoring subtle but important changes in pupil development

  • Supporting physical independence and participation

  • Building strong relationships with families and professionals

Who would suit this role?

Essential:

  • Qualified teacher or appropriately experienced SEND educator

  • Previous SEND teaching experience

  • Strong understanding of differentiated and personalised learning

  • Confidence leading a classroom support team

  • Excellent communication and multidisciplinary working skills

  • A flexible and reflective approach to teaching

Highly desirable:

  • PMLD experience

  • SLD experience

  • Complex communication needs

  • AAC knowledge

  • Autism experience

  • Sensory-based teaching

  • Previous specialist school experience

Teaching beyond conventional outcomes

In a PMLD classroom, progress may be gradual, subtle and highly individual.

A pupil anticipating the next part of a routine, making a deliberate choice or consistently responding to a communication strategy can represent meaningful development.

The challenge is recognising those moments, building on them and creating further opportunities for the pupil to succeed.

For the right teacher, that is exactly what makes this area of education so rewarding.

Why this opportunity?

You will have the chance to teach creatively rather than trying to force pupils into a conventional curriculum that does not meet their needs.

You will work alongside experienced SEND professionals and have the opportunity to make decisions based on what will genuinely help each pupil communicate, participate and become more independent.

If you are already teaching within SEND, or have strong complex needs experience and want to develop further within PMLD education, this could be an excellent next step.
