When a child cannot tell you in words that they are ready to learn, how do you know?

Some teachers can answer that straight away. A head turns towards a familiar song. A hand stays on the switch a little longer than it did yesterday. If you notice those moments and build your lessons around them, you already do the hardest part of this PMLD Teacher role.

About the PMLD Teacher role

I am currently working with a primary special school in North West London that needs a PMLD Teacher from as soon as possible, or from January 2027. The role starts as a long-term placement, with a route to a permanent contract once you and the school know it is the right fit.

You will teach a small class of primary-aged pupils and lead the Teaching Assistants in your room. Progress here might mean a child accepting a new texture or choosing between two objects for the first time. You will be the person who spots that moment, records it and shares it with the family.

The school and the pupils

Pupils have profound and severe learning difficulties. Some also have autism, complex medical needs or sensory impairments, and many communicate without speech.

Therapists and nursing staff work on site with class teams. When a pupil’s seating or medical routine needs to change, you have someone to ask in the building, so you never carry that responsibility on your own.

Sensory and water-based activities are part of the weekly timetable. Your planning can reach beyond the four walls of your classroom.

Candidates often travel from Stanmore and Wembley.

What you will do as a PMLD Teacher

  • Plan and teach a small primary class of pupils with PMLD using sensory approaches
  • Build each child’s communication with objects of reference, switches, signing and symbols
  • Lead your Teaching Assistants and set the rhythm of the class day
  • Set small-step targets from each pupil’s EHC Plan and share progress with families
  • Work with therapists and nurses on positioning, physical programmes and personal care

About you

  • A genuine interest in teaching children with PMLD and complex needs
  • QTS, with experience teaching pupils with PMLD, SLD or complex needs
  • Confidently giving clear, calm direction to other adults in the classroom
  • Happy to share personal care, moving and handling and medical routines with your team
  • Primary teachers with strong SEND experience, or teachers from SLD or autism classes, ready to specialise, are welcome to apply
