PMLD Teaching Assistant – Complex & Profound Learning Needs

This specialist SEND setting supports children and young people with Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and associated needs, including severe learning difficulties, complex communication needs, physical disabilities, and sensory processing differences. Pupils are often non-verbal and may have additional medical or physical needs.
Progress in this environment looks different. It is measured in engagement, comfort, communication attempts, and trust. This role is for people who understand that and value it.
The Setting
You will be working in a highly specialist, well-supported SEND environment designed to meet the complex needs of pupils who require intensive adult support throughout the school day.

Your Day-to-Day Role
As a PMLD Teaching Assistant, you will:

Provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils with profound and complex needs

Support communication using sensory cues, objects of reference, symbols, or AAC
-
Assist with personal care, feeding, and hygiene needs respectfully
-
Support moving and handling in line with training and guidance
-
Help pupils engage in sensory and therapeutic learning activities

Monitor wellbeing and respond to non-verbal communication cues
-
Work closely with teachers, therapists, and healthcare professionals

This role is physically and emotionally demanding.
It involves personal care, close support, and sustained attention throughout the day. Progress is often subtle and slow. You must be comfortable working at a pupil’s pace rather than your own.
