PMLD Teaching Assistant – Barnet

Complex Needs & SLD | £95–£110 per day | Full-time

Some roles in education are centred around lessons.

This one is centred around the whole person.

I am recruiting for a PMLD Teaching Assistant to work within a specialist SEND setting in Barnet, supporting pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties and additional complex needs.

For these pupils, progress can look very different.

It might be independently communicating a choice, responding to a familiar adult, tolerating a new sensory experience or becoming more involved in their own daily routine.

You need to be someone who understands that these moments matter.

What will you be doing?

As a PMLD Teaching Assistant / Complex Needs Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teachers and specialist professionals to support pupils throughout their school day.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Supporting pupils with PMLD and severe learning difficulties

  • Providing one-to-one and small-group support

  • Helping pupils access sensory and differentiated learning activities

  • Supporting communication using individualised approaches

  • Encouraging independence wherever possible

  • Supporting mobility and physical access where required

  • Helping pupils manage transitions and routines

  • Providing personal care where required

  • Working alongside teachers and other professionals supporting the pupil

This is a hands-on role where consistency, patience and attention to detail are incredibly important.

Who are we looking for?

Essential

  • Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable individuals

  • A patient and caring approach

  • Confidence providing practical, hands-on support

  • Strong communication skills

  • Reliability and consistency

  • Willingness to support pupils with personal care where required

Desirable

Experience with any of the following would be particularly useful:

  • PMLD

  • SLD

  • Complex needs

  • Autism

  • Physical disabilities

  • Sensory needs

  • Non-verbal communication

  • Personal care

  • SEND schools or specialist provisions

Experience does not necessarily have to come from a school.

Candidates from care, healthcare, support work, residential settings or other relevant environments can bring extremely valuable skills into this type of role.

Why consider PMLD support?

You will learn to notice progress that other people might miss.

A pupil initiating communication.

Making a choice independently.

Engaging with an activity for longer.

Becoming comfortable enough with you to accept support.

It is detailed, relationship-based SEND work and can be incredibly meaningful for someone who enjoys getting to know pupils properly rather than rushing them through a timetable.

Pay and working pattern

£95–£110 per day, depending on experience
