Supporting Young People to Become More Independent
We are working with a specialist Post 16 setting in Havering that supports young adults as they develop the skills and confidence they need for life beyond education.
The setting provides a calm, supportive and purposeful environment, with a strong focus on helping learners become more independent and prepared for their next steps.
The team is passionate about helping young people make progress at their own pace, build confidence and develop skills that will support them both now and in the future.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The young adults are aged 16+ and have a range of needs, including autism, ADHD, Speech, Language and Communication Needs, and social and emotional needs.
Alongside their education, learners have opportunities to develop practical skills that are important for everyday life. This can include independent travel, budgeting, cooking, shopping, following routines, communication and preparing for employment or supported living.
Each learner has their own goals and pathway, with support tailored around their individual strengths, needs and aspirations.
The Role
As an Independence Support Mentor, you will support young adults both within the setting and out in the community.
You will help learners take part in practical activities, encourage them to try things for themselves and provide reassurance and guidance when needed.
The role will involve:
- Supporting learners during lessons, activities and practical sessions
- Accompanying young people during community-based learning
- Helping learners develop independence and confidence
- Encouraging communication, decision making and problem solving
- Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour
- Working alongside teachers, therapists and other members of the team
The aim is to provide the right level of support while encouraging each young person to become as independent as possible.
Who This Could Suit
This role would suit someone who is calm, patient, caring and genuinely enjoys helping young people make progress.
Experience working with young people with SEND would be beneficial, as would experience in education, care, youth work or support work. However, we are equally interested in people who have the right attitude and a genuine interest in helping young adults develop their independence.
You will need to be reliable, consistent and comfortable supporting learners in both educational and community settings.
