Who plans maths for the children that the published scheme leaves behind?

In many primary schools, there is one teacher. You adapt the slides at night. You make number cards by hand because the textbook jumped three steps at once.

This Primary Maths Lead role in Wandsworth asks you to do that work on purpose, for a whole school.

Maths Lead Teacher role

I am working with a specialist school in Wandsworth that needs a teacher to lead maths for its lower-attaining pupils. You would teach primary-aged classes yourself. You would also decide how maths is sequenced, starting from early numbers, and show the adults around you how to teach it the same way.

The pupils

Pupils are autistic, and many have communication needs. Most are working well below age-related expectations in maths. They feel safest when routines and language stay the same, so a maths approach that every adult uses consistently helps them learn.

Progress looks different for each child. For one, it might be matching the numeral 4 to four objects. For another, it might be counting out the right coins for lunch. Your planning would reach both.

Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy advice is on site, so you can ask a specialist when a pupil’s communication or sensory needs get in the way. The school is commutable from Putney and Wimbledon.

What you will do

  • Lead maths curriculum planning for lower-attaining pupils
  • Teach primary-aged pupils in small, carefully sequenced steps
  • Write clear progressions that colleagues can teach from
  • Track progress and adjust the plan when a pupil gets stuck
  • Model and coach maths teaching for teachers and support staff

About you

  • An interest in autism and how autistic children learn maths
  • QTS and a proven track record with lower-attaining primary pupils
  • Experience leading maths, such as subject lead or intervention lead
  • Confidence planning maths from early numbers upwards
  • Calm, clear communication with colleagues and families

Specialist school experience is not required. If you lead maths or run maths interventions in a mainstream primary, your experience counts here.

Leading the subject

The sequence you write is the one every class follows. When a colleague is unsure how to teach place value, your plan and your coaching give them the answer. For an experienced primary teacher ready to step up, the subject is yours to shape from the start.
