Primary SEN Teaching Assistant, South West London

Immediate start, long-term, Monday to Friday 8:30am to 4pm, term time only

£95 to £100 per day, PAYE, weekly pay

Could you be the calm, steady adult a five-year-old looks for when the classroom gets too loud?

About the role

A welcoming primary school in South West London is looking for a Primary SEN Teaching Assistant to work 1:1 with a Year 1 pupil who has an EHCP. This is a long-term role, so you get to know one child well and build that trust day by day.

The pupil enjoys learning and keeps up with the curriculum. When things become too much, there can be moments of significant emotional dysregulation, which may include shouting or throwing objects. Your job is to help the pupil feel safe, settle again and get back to learning. At five or six, many children are still learning to name big feelings, and one consistent adult makes that much easier.

You will have support around you. You work alongside the class teacher and the SENCO, and the school has quiet spaces available for times when a short break from the classroom is helpful.

What you will do

  • Support one Year 1 pupil 1:1 throughout the school day
  • Help the pupil take part in lessons and follow classroom routines
  • Stay calm during moments of dysregulation and use de-escalation strategies
  • Take the pupil to a quiet space when needed, then help them return to class
  • Share what works with the class teacher and SENCO, so support stays consistent

About you

  • A genuine interest in SEN, SEMH or emotional regulation in young children
  • Experience supporting children with SEN, behaviour or emotional needs, paid or voluntary
  • The ability to stay calm and keep boundaries clear when a child feels overwhelmed
  • Primary school experience
  • Nursery practitioners, nannies, youth workers and psychology graduates are welcome to apply

Why this role

In a 1:1 role, you see the progress up close. Over a term, moments of dysregulation often become shorter, and good days longer. You will know that you helped make that happen. Key Stage 1 is also a strong place to learn regulation and de-escalation strategies early. These skills carry into any SEND career, whether you plan to teach, train as a psychologist or move into therapy.

The school is within commuting distance of Clapham and Streatham.

Enhanced DBS and safer recruitment checks apply to this role, and Parker Smith Inclusion can help you with the DBS.
