When did you last see a pupil use a skill you worked on in a lesson that same afternoon? In this specialist SEND school, it happens most days.
The role and the school
A specialist school in Central London is looking for a Paediatric Occupational Therapist to join its therapy team. The pupils have speech, language and communication needs. Many also have sensory processing or motor coordination difficulties, and some are autistic.
You would mainly work with upper primary and secondary pupils. Many join after other settings did not work for them, and they arrive with low confidence and real barriers to learning.
Therapy sits inside the curriculum here. You plan with teachers, Speech and Language Therapists and support staff, and you work in classrooms as well as therapy sessions. Caseloads stay at a size where you get to know each pupil and see their progress across the year.
The school is commutable from Kentish Town, Kilburn and across North and Central London.
What you will do
- Assess pupils’ sensory and motor needs and set clear OT targets
- Deliver individual and small-group therapy, in class and in sessions
- Build practical skills such as handwriting and scissor use
- Help pupils understand and manage their sensory and emotional regulation
- Write EHC Plan reports and share strategies with class teams
About you
- A real interest in how sensory and motor needs shape a child’s school day
- HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist
- Experience with children who have sensory or motor needs, autism or communication difficulties
- A calm approach and enjoyment of working closely with teachers and other therapists
- Newly qualified OTs with paediatric placements are welcome, as are OTs moving from NHS or community paediatric services
What the school offers
- Term-time working, plus additional weeks during school holidays
- Regular clinical supervision and a strong CPD offer
- Free lunch every week and a wellbeing allowance
- A healthcare cashback plan
- Planning time with the wider therapy and teaching team
