About the role

For some children, behaviour can be a way of communicating emotions, frustration or difficulties they do not yet know how to express. Having the right person around them can make a huge difference.
A specialist education setting in Acton is looking for a School Behaviour Mentor to join their team and support children with SEND, SEMH and behavioural needs.
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys building relationships, understands the importance of consistency and wants to make a genuine difference to children's lives.
What will you be doing?
As a School Behaviour Mentor, you will play an important role in helping children feel safe, understood and ready to engage with education.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Building positive and trusting relationships with children
- Providing one-to-one and small-group support
- Helping children recognise and manage their emotions
- Supporting children during periods of challenging behaviour
- Identifying triggers and potential barriers to learning
- Encouraging positive behaviour and healthy coping strategies
- Helping children develop confidence and independence
- Supporting pupils to re-engage with classroom learning
- Maintaining clear, consistent and supportive boundaries
- Working closely with teachers and pastoral colleagues
- Contributing to a calm, safe and positive learning environment
- Sharing relevant pastoral and behavioural information with the wider team
Who would suit this role?
You do not necessarily need previous experience working under the title of Behaviour Mentor.
This role could suit someone who has worked as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Mentor, Youth Worker, Pastoral Support Worker, Support Worker, Sports Coach or in another role involving children and young people.
Most importantly, you will be someone who is:
- Patient and approachable
- Calm when situations become challenging
- Confident setting appropriate boundaries
- Resilient and consistent
- Empathetic and non-judgemental
- A strong communicator
- Able to build professional relationships
- Passionate about helping children overcome barriers
Experience within SEND, SEMH, alternative provision, specialist education, youth work or behaviour support would be advantageous.

For a child who struggles with emotional regulation, relationships or behaviour, having a consistent adult who understands them can be the starting point for real progress.
You might help a pupil manage a difficult interaction without escalation, find the confidence to return to the classroom or develop a strategy that allows them to communicate how they are feeling.
