Science and Food Technology Technician
North London | £105 - £115 PAYE per day | Full-time, term time only | ASAP Start
Interviews are arranged ASAP - early applications are strongly recommended
What does it take for a teenager who has spent months too anxious to come into school to stand at a lab bench, watch an experiment work and feel proud of it? Very often, it starts with the person who set up that bench before the lesson began.
I am currently working with a specialist SEMH secondary school in North London that needs a Science Technician to support practical Food Technology lessons. This is a full-time, term-time only role, long-term to permanent, 8:30am to 4pm, Monday to Friday.
About the School and the Students
The school supports secondary-aged young people with social, emotional and mental health needs. Many have found mainstream school hard, and classes are kept small so each student gets the attention they need.
Practical lessons matter here. For a student who finds a page of writing overwhelming, measuring a solution or cooking a meal can be the first time in a long while that learning feels possible. A calm, well-prepared room makes that moment far more likely.
The school is within easy reach of Barnet, Enfield and Camden.
What You Will Be Doing
- Getting the science lab ready before each practical lesson, from equipment to chemicals, with safety checks done properly
- Preparing the cooking room and ingredients, keeping allergens, storage and hygiene under control
- Working alongside Teachers in practical lessons and helping students handle equipment safely
- Tracking stock, keeping records and risk assessments in order, and ordering supplies
- Flagging anything faulty or unsafe, and leaving both rooms ready for the next class
The role also includes occasional cover and regular duties around the school, so students will know you beyond the lab.
About You
- A genuine interest in supporting young people with SEMH needs, or a wish to move into a specialist setting
- Experience in a school, laboratory, Food Technology room, kitchen or similar practical environment
- GCSEs or equivalent in English and Maths
- A methodical, organised approach and a firm commitment to health, safety and hygiene
- Calm under pressure, and able to use your own initiative or work as part of a team
Food Hygiene or COSHH training is helpful, and the school will support you to complete it if you have not done so yet. If you work as a Science Technician in a mainstream school or hold a science degree with lab experience, your skills transfer directly. People from catering or food production who want to work with young people are welcome to apply too.
Why This Role
Many technician posts sit behind a prep room door. This one puts you in the room with students, in a school built around therapeutic support, where a practical lesson can be a young person’s route back into learning. Ongoing training in lab practice, food hygiene, and health and safety is included with the role.
Through Parker Smith Inclusion, you are paid weekly via PAYE, so you see exactly what you earn with no umbrella company deductions. You also get free CPD and, if the role suits you long term, a route from a long-term placement to a permanent contract after two terms, at no cost to you.
Interviews are being arranged now, so early applications will be seen first.
Parker Smith Inclusion is an ethical SEND specialist recruitment agency. We put people first, taking the time to get to know you and finding you the right career opportunity.
