Contract: Full-time, Term Time Only
Start Date: September

Make a Lasting Difference at the Start of a Young Person's Secondary School Journey

Are you an intelligent, caring and ambitious individual looking to make a genuine impact in education?

We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive mainstream secondary school in Hackney from September. This is a fantastic opportunity to support Year 7 students with Special Educational Needs as they make the important transition from primary to secondary education.

Many of the students you will support have previously benefited from one-to-one or small group support in primary school. Your role will be to help them build confidence, develop independence and successfully adapt to a larger, more demanding secondary school environment.

This is an incredibly rewarding position for someone who enjoys building positive relationships, solving problems and helping young people achieve their potential.

The Role

Working closely with the school's SENCO, teaching staff and pastoral team, you will:

  • Support students with a range of Special Educational Needs within Year 7.

  • Help pupils transition confidently from primary to secondary school.

  • Provide one-to-one and small group support inside and outside the classroom.

  • Encourage independence while offering the right level of guidance and reassurance.

  • Adapt learning activities to meet individual needs.

  • Support students with organisation, emotional regulation, communication and engagement.

  • Build trusting relationships that help pupils feel safe, confident and ready to learn.

  • Monitor progress and provide feedback to teaching staff.

  • Promote inclusion and ensure every student can access the curriculum successfully.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who is academically strong, emotionally intelligent and genuinely passionate about supporting young people.

You will ideally have:

  • Strong GCSEs (including English and Maths) and A Levels.

  • A degree (preferred but not essential), particularly in Psychology, Education, English, Maths, Science or another academic discipline.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Patience, resilience and emotional maturity.

  • A calm, positive and proactive approach.

  • The ability to build strong relationships with young people.

  • High levels of organisation and professionalism.

  • A genuine interest in Special Educational Needs and inclusive education.

Previous experience working with children or young people is advantageous, but we also welcome applications from graduates, aspiring teachers, educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and other professionals looking to gain valuable school-based experience.

Why Apply?

This role offers the opportunity to:

  • Make a real difference during one of the most important stages of a young person's education.

  • Work within a supportive and experienced SEN team.

  • Gain invaluable experience in a highly regarded mainstream secondary school.

  • Develop specialist knowledge of SEND and inclusive education.

  • Build experience for future careers in teaching, educational psychology, therapy, social work or pastoral care.

  • Join a school that values inclusion, collaboration and high expectations for every student.

What We're Looking For

The successful candidate will be:

  • Intelligent, motivated and eager to learn.

  • Compassionate without lowering expectations.

  • Calm and confident when supporting students with additional needs.

  • A positive role model who encourages independence.

  • Professional, reliable and committed to helping every child succeed.
