What would change for a child out of school if one steady adult turned up for them each day?

You could be that adult in this SEMH Behaviour Mentor post in Kingston. The work is one-to-one with primary-age children with SEMH, ASC and ADHD who are not currently accessing school.

Visits take place in the child’s own home or in a quiet community space, such as a local library. Your SEMH experience in schools is what prepares you for it.

About the setting

This is an SEN outreach service for primary-age children. Every child on the caseload is out of school for various reasons, and many have struggled in their education for some time.

Some of the children will not trust a new adult straight away. The approach is relational and therapeutic. A child’s confidence and sense of safety come first, and learning builds from there.

Kingston is well served by trains and buses. If you live in New Malden or Twickenham, the commute is short.

What you will do

  • Spend your first visits getting to know the child and earning their trust
  • Support emotional regulation through co-regulation, especially when a child is distressed
  • Put behaviour support plans into practice and pass on what you notice so they can be adjusted
  • Plan short, focused activities, often built around play and hands-on tasks
  • Keep parents and carers involved, and join progress reviews with other professionals

About you

  • A real interest in SEMH and in understanding the reasons behind a child’s behaviour
  • Essential: hands-on experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs in a school setting, whether mainstream, specialist, AP or PRU
  • Patience when progress is slow, or a visit has to change course
  • Confidence working independently in a family home or a public setting
  • Knowledge of ASC or ADHD, or a willingness to build it quickly

People who often do well here include SEMH TAs, behaviour mentors, learning mentors, and primary support staff with strong experience in behaviour. Psychology graduates and aspiring Educational Psychologists who have supported children with SEMH in schools would also be a good fit.

If your background is in youth work, play therapy, or social work, and you have supported children in schools, please apply. That experience carries over well to working alongside families at home.

Why apply

This post suits someone who wants to see the effect of their work clearly. With one child at a time, small changes stand out. A child might start to greet you at the door, or stay with a task a little longer than the week before.

The hours are 8:30am to 4pm in term time, with £110 - £130 PAYE per day paid weekly.
