About the role

What if a young person who has stopped believing in school simply needs one adult who refuses to give up on them?

For some pupils, behaviour is not about refusing to learn. It is about not yet having the tools to manage frustration, emotions or difficult situations.

A specialist SEND provision in Brent is looking for an SEMH Learning Mentor to support young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs.

This is a relationship-led role for someone who can remain calm, consistent and curious about what sits behind a pupil's behaviour.

The setting

The setting supports young people with SEMH needs, alongside additional needs including Autism and ADHD.

Many pupils have experienced difficulties within mainstream education and benefit from a smaller, more structured environment where relationships and emotional wellbeing are prioritised.

You will work alongside teachers and support staff to provide consistent strategies that help pupils regulate, engage with learning and develop greater independence.

The role

As an SEMH Learning Mentor, you will:

Support pupils on a one-to-one and small-group basis
Build positive and trusting relationships
Provide regular check-ins and pastoral support
Help pupils recognise and manage emotional triggers
Support emotional regulation and positive behaviour
Encourage pupils to re-engage with learning
Develop consistent strategies alongside teachers and support staff
Maintain clear boundaries and expectations
Support pupils through challenging situations
Help pupils develop confidence, resilience and independence

Who we are looking for

This role would suit someone with experience in youth work, SEN support, residential care, mentoring, behaviour support or alternative provision.

You will be:

Patient and emotionally intelligent
Calm under pressure
Consistent and resilient
Able to build trust with young people
Confident managing challenging behaviour
Non-judgemental and empathetic
Curious about the reasons behind behaviour
A strong communicator

Previous SEMH or trauma-informed experience would be beneficial, but relevant transferable experience will also be considered.

Why this role matters

For some young people, school has become associated with failure.

The right mentor can help change that.

It could be helping a pupil recognise when they are becoming overwhelmed, giving them the space to regulate or encouraging them to return to learning after a difficult situation.

Progress does not always happen in obvious ways.

Sometimes it is a pupil making a better choice than they did yesterday.

Sometimes it is simply knowing there is an adult who will still be there tomorrow.
