About the Role
This is a specialist SEMH Teacher role based in West London, working with a dedicated Year 7 nurture group in a school built specifically around Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Pupils here often present with co-occurring Autism and ADHD, and many arrive having experienced disrupted or difficult starts in mainstream or previous specialist settings. This is not a mainstream classroom with extra support bolted on. It is a setting designed from the ground up around regulation, relationship, and trust, where the curriculum comes second to a pupil feeling safe enough to access it at all.
The School
This West London specialist school takes a relational, trauma-aware approach to SEMH education. Class sizes are kept small, and staffing ratios are high, giving Teachers the space to genuinely know every pupil in their group rather than manage a caseload. Leadership here understands that SEMH teaching is a distinct difference from mainstream teaching, and staff are trained and supported accordingly, rather than left to work it out alone.
Mornings are built around settling pupils in and reading the room before any academic work begins. You will run a small Year 7 SEMH group through a structured yet flexible day, adapting the pace to what pupils bring. Some days that means a full timetable of academic progress. Other days it means holding the room together through a difficult morning and rebuilding from there. Both are treated as success.
Responsibilities
- Lead a small, dedicated Year 7 SEMH nurture group, full-time
- Plan and deliver a curriculum that balances academic progress with regulation and emotional development
- Build consistent routines and trusted relationships with pupils who may test boundaries as a form of communication
- Work closely with support staff, therapists, and senior leaders to maintain a joined-up approach to each pupil's needs
- Contribute to pupil progress reviews and behaviour support plans
- Informal, optional involvement with the school's SENCO for Teachers interested in developing towards a SEND leadership pathway, including exposure to EHCP processes and provision planning. This is available if wanted, not expected, and carries no additional workload requirement.
What We're Looking For
Solid, direct experience teaching pupils with SEMH is essential. This is not a role to build SEND experience from scratch. You should already understand what dysregulation looks like before it escalates, and how to bring a pupil back into a lesson without turning it into a confrontation. Experience alongside pupils with co-occurring Autism or ADHD will strengthen your application. Qualified Teacher Status is required.
