Primary-trained teachers often wonder whether their background translates to secondary. In a nurture setting with young people whose SEMH needs are complex, it does not just translate. It is often exactly what is needed.

The way you were trained to think about a child, about where they are developmentally, about what they need emotionally before they can access anything academically, maps directly onto this role. At KS3 in a specialist SEMH school, the fundamentals remain the same. The pupils are older, but the work of building safety and trust before anything else stays the same.

This is a special school in Richmond, South West London, for pupils aged 7 to 19. Every pupil holds an EHCP, and the primary need across the school is social, emotional and mental health. Many of these young people carry significant adverse experiences. They have often had difficult relationships with school before arriving here. What they need is not a teacher who delivers content. They need someone who can hold the room, read the situation, and respond to the person in front of them.

The school operates across two sites in the Royal Borough of Richmond Upon Thames. Classes have up to eight pupils, with high adult-to-pupil ratios throughout. The curriculum is tailored to individual needs and developmental stages rather than fixed programmes. You will work closely with support staff and therapists for each young person, and the leadership team, experienced in SEMH and well-regarded by the staff around them, will properly support teachers. New staff are not left to figure it out on their own.

This is a growing school, part of a well-established trust that works exclusively with children with SEND. The school is built on the belief that every young person deserves access to a good education, regardless of the complexity of their needs. That belief shapes how the school runs, how staff are treated, and how decisions get made.

What this role asks of you:

  • Teaching a nurture group at KS3 within a specialist SEMH setting
  • Adapting your approach to meet pupils at their actual stage of development
  • Working as part of a close team around each young person
  • Bringing a relational, trauma-informed approach to everything you do
  • Building trust with young people who may not extend it easily

What you will need:

  • QTS
  • Genuine experience working with young people with SEMH needs
  • An understanding of trauma-informed and relational practice
  • Primary training is a significant advantage for this role and is strongly encouraged
