What does a 13-year-old need from you when they are still working at primary level, and school has mostly been a place where they got things wrong?

I am currently working with a friendly and supportive special school in Richmond, South West London. They are looking for an SEMH Teacher to lead a KS3 class from January 2027. Every pupil has an EHCP, and social, emotional and mental health needs are the main area of need across the school.

Many of the KS3 pupils are working within the primary curriculum. The school wants a Teacher who can teach that content to teenagers in a way that respects their age. Here, that skill matters more than a specialist subject.

About the school

Classes have a maximum of eight pupils, with a high number of adults in every room. The curriculum is planned around each pupil’s needs and stage of development, so you start from where each pupil is.

The leadership team is experienced in SEMH. Staff plan together around each young person, and you will have support in the room when a pupil is struggling. The school is commutable from Kingston and Teddington, with good links across South West London and into Surrey.

What you will do

  • Plan and teach adapted lessons for a KS3 class of up to eight pupils
  • Teach primary curriculum content to secondary-age pupils in a way that suits their age
  • Support pupils through periods of dysregulation and help them settle back into learning
  • Contribute to EHC Plan reviews with clear evidence of each pupil’s progress
  • Work with support staff to build steady, trusting relationships with every pupil

About you

  • A genuine interest in SEMH and in the young people who find school hardest
  • QTS (essential)
  • Confidence teaching the primary curriculum, through primary training or solid experience with it
  • Calm, consistent boundaries and the patience to earn trust over time
  • Secondary-trained Teachers with primary curriculum experience are welcome to apply, as are mainstream Teachers who have supported SEMH or autistic pupils

If you are teaching in mainstream now

You may already be the Teacher who takes on the pupils others find hard to reach, adapting work and spotting when something is wrong, on top of a full timetable. In this school, that work is the main part of the job, and the class size gives you time to do it well. The school supports Teachers moving from mainstream into specialist education from their first day.
