When a young person has pushed every adult away, what brings them back through your classroom door the next morning?
Often it is one teacher. Someone who stayed calm, kept their word and turned up the same way every day. If you already teach like that, this SEMH Nurture Teacher role in Richmond gives you a class built around it.
About the school and the young people
I am currently working with an SEMH specialist school in Richmond upon Thames. Every pupil has an EHCP. Many have lived through trauma or attachment difficulties, and anxiety sits close to the surface for most of them. Some also have ASC or ADHD.
You will teach a nurture class of KS3 and KS4 pupils. There are up to eight pupils in the room, with a high adult-to-pupil ratio. You plan for each pupil’s developmental stage, so lessons start from where the young person is. You also work as part of the small team around each pupil, so their wider support shapes what happens in your classroom.
The school is commutable from Kingston and Teddington.
What nurture teaching looks like here
Some days, a settled start and a calm group are the first wins, and the learning builds from there. On other days, a pupil who refused to sit down last month asks for help with a question. Progress in a nurture class often shows up in trust first, and this school values that progress as much as test results.
What you will do
- Plan and teach lessons pitched at each pupil’s developmental stage
- Build calm, predictable routines, so pupils feel safe enough to learn
- Respond to dysregulation with steady, trauma-informed support
- Work with the team around each pupil on their EHCP targets
- Notice and record small steps forward in learning and in trust
About you
- A genuine interest in SEMH and in young people who find trust hard
- QTS, with experience teaching pupils with SEMH, ASC or complex needs
- A working understanding of trauma-informed practice
- The ability to stay steady when a lesson changes direction
- Mainstream teachers ready to move into specialist teaching are welcome
If you are moving from mainstream, you get SEND training from day one. Experience with dysregulated pupils counts here, whether you gained it in a classroom, an inclusion base or a nurture group.
Starting in January
If you teach in a school now, the resignation deadline for a January start is 31 October. Speak to Heeji this week, and you will have time to visit the school and decide before then.
