SEMH Primary Teacher Job – Specialist SEND Provision

I am recruiting for a qualified Primary Teacher to work within a specialist alternative provision supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is not a mainstream teaching role with light SEND exposure. This is a dedicated SEMH setting for primary-aged pupils who:

  • Have experienced permanent exclusion or are at risk of exclusion
  • Present with emotional dysregulation and trauma responses
  • Have ADHD, Autism traits, attachment needs
  • May have EHCPs
  • Struggle to engage in large mainstream classrooms

About the Setting

  • Small class sizes
  • High staff to pupil ratio
  • Structured, therapeutic approach
  • Trauma-informed practice embedded daily
  • Clear behaviour frameworks and restorative systems
  • Strong pastoral and multi-agency collaboration

The focus is emotional regulation first, curriculum second.

SEMH Primary Teacher Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver differentiated KS1 or KS2 lessons
  • Adapt curriculum for pupils with SEMH, ADHD, Autism and attachment needs
  • Implement behaviour support plans and EHCP targets
  • Use de-escalation and restorative approaches confidently
  • Build predictable routines that support regulation
  • Track both academic and emotional progress
  • Work closely with teaching assistants and pastoral leads
  • Liaise with families and external professionals

Progress in this setting may look like:

  • A pupil remaining in class for a full session
  • A reduction in incidents
  • Successful restorative conversations
  • Improved attendance and engagement

Essential Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Proven experience teaching pupils with SEMH needs
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation strategies
  • Experience in Alternative Provision, PRU or specialist SEND settings
  • Emotional resilience and professional boundaries

Applications without relevant SEMH/SEND experience will not be shortlisted.

This role is not suitable for teachers seeking a standard mainstream classroom position.

The Reality of the Role

This is emotionally demanding work. Pupils may challenge before they trust. You must be calm, consistent and reflective.

If you understand that behaviour is communication and that regulation drives learning, you will thrive here.
