SEMH Primary Teacher – Chelmsford, Essex | ASAP Start | Flexible (Full-Time or Part-Time)

Salary: MPS/UPS Fringe

Are you a compassionate and dedicated teacher with a genuine passion for supporting children with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs? Do you believe that meaningful relationships and emotional wellbeing are the foundation for successful learning? If so, this could be a truly rewarding opportunity for you.

We are delighted to be working with a specialist SEMH primary school in Chelmsford, Essex, currently seeking an enthusiastic and nurturing SEMH Primary Teacher to join their team. This is a role that can start as soon as possible, with flexibility for either a permanent position or a long-term agency placement, depending on your preference.

About the School

This unique and supportive setting caters to children who are unable to access mainstream education due to complex SEMH needs. Many pupils may also have additional diagnoses, including autism, and require a highly personalised and therapeutic approach to learning. Class sizes are intentionally small—typically around 4 to 6 students—allowing you to build strong, trusting relationships and make a meaningful difference in each child’s journey.

The school places a strong emphasis on emotional wellbeing, recognising that before academic progress can take place, students must feel safe, understood, and supported. This is a place where patience, empathy, and consistency are valued just as much as teaching ability.

The Role

As an SEMH Primary Teacher, you will deliver a tailored primary curriculum in a nurturing and structured environment. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including therapists and support staff, to ensure each child receives the holistic support they need to thrive both emotionally and academically.

What We’re Looking For

We are seeking individuals who can bring warmth, resilience, and a genuine commitment to supporting vulnerable learners. Ideally, you will have:

  • A therapeutic and child-centred approach to teaching
  • Experience delivering the primary curriculum
  • Strong understanding of emotional regulation and positive behaviour strategies, including de-escalation techniques
  • A calm, consistent, and nurturing presence as a positive role model
  • Knowledge or experience in SEMH, trauma-informed practice, sensory processing, or social communication needs
  • The ability to build meaningful, trusting relationships with students
  • Experience working with disengaged or hard-to-reach young people

While previous experience in an SEMH or specialist setting is highly beneficial, we also warmly welcome applications from teachers who are keen to take their first step into SEND education and are eager to learn.

What You Can Expect

This is more than just a teaching role—it’s an opportunity to be part of a dedicated and supportive team that shares your passion for making a difference. You can expect:

  • A collaborative environment with like-minded professionals
  • Opportunities for long-term progression or permanent placement
  • Experience working within a therapeutic, specialist setting
  • Close collaboration with multidisciplinary therapy teams
  • Access to high-quality, specialist training and ongoing professional development

Interested?

If this sounds like the kind of role where you could truly make an impact, we would love to hear from you. Please apply directly via this advert to find out more about this and other SEND opportunities.

If you do not hear from us within five working days, unfortunately, your application has not been successful on this occasion. However, we will retain your CV securely and welcome you to get in touch to discuss future opportunities and your SEND career journey.
