2:1 SEN Support Assistant – Year 1 (SEMH)

Start: ASAP
Duration: At least until Easter (with potential to extend)
We are working with a welcoming primary school seeking a resilient, proactive and compassionate SEN Support Assistant to work on a 2:1 basis with a Year 1 pupil presenting with SEMH needs.
This is a rewarding but highly challenging role, suited to someone who understands that behaviour is a form of communication and who can remain calm and consistent during periods of dysregulation.
About the Role

Providing 2:1 support for a pupil returning to school following suspension

Supporting emotional regulation, engagement and safety throughout the school day

Working both in and out of the classroom, following a structured daily routine

Supporting a structured cycle of exercise → learning → reward → exercise

Using creativity, play and physical activity (e.g. outdoor learning, imaginative play) to build trust and engagement

Identifying triggers and supporting regulation, including prompting regular snacks

Thinking on your feet and adapting support in the moment
About the Child

Year 1 pupil with significant SEMH needs

During periods of dysregulation may display physical behaviours
-
Requires consistent, calm adults with strong boundaries
The Ideal Candidate

Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour (school or care background welcome)

High levels of resilience and emotional intelligence

Confident managing physical behaviours safely

Able to build strong relationships while maintaining clear boundaries

Creative, flexible and confident redirecting behaviour positively
-
Physically fit and comfortable supporting outdoor and active regulation strategies
-
Team Teach training desirable but not essential for the right person
