SEMH Support Assistant – Year 6

Location: Thurrock
Pay: £100 per day PAYE
Contract: Temporary to permanent
Start Date: ASAP

Some children need someone who won't give up on them.

For pupils who have struggled with school, building trust can take time. They might find it difficult to manage their emotions, engage with learning or feel comfortable in an educational setting. Having the right person alongside them can help change that.

Parker Smith Inclusion is looking for an SEMH Support Assistant to join a specialist provision in Thurrock, supporting Year 6 pupils who need additional help with their social, emotional and mental health.

This is a hands-on role for someone who can stay calm when things get challenging, build positive relationships and give pupils the consistency they need to move forward.

What will you be doing?

You'll support pupils across the provision, helping them access learning, manage difficult moments and develop more positive relationships with education.

Your role will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support

  • Helping pupils overcome barriers to learning

  • Supporting emotional regulation and positive behaviour

  • Building trust with pupils who may have had difficult experiences in education

  • Creating a safe, structured and supportive environment

  • Encouraging confidence, independence and social development

  • Helping pupils stay engaged and focused throughout the day

  • Working closely with teaching staff and other professionals to provide consistent support

You'll need to recognise that progress won't look the same for every pupil. Sometimes, success means completing a task; sometimes, it's managing a difficult situation or being willing to try again.

Who would suit this role?

We're looking for someone who is patient, resilient and consistent, with the confidence to build relationships with pupils who may struggle to trust adults or manage their emotions.

Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND or challenging behaviour would be beneficial. We would also welcome candidates with backgrounds in youth work, pastoral support, behaviour management or similar settings.

You'll need to be comfortable supporting pupils at Year 6 level, adapting your approach and remaining calm when situations become challenging.
