Have you seen how much a child can learn once their anxiety finally settles?

I am working with a SEN school in Mole Valley, Surrey, that needs a permanent SEMH Teacher to lead its nurture class. The pupils are primary and secondary age. Many are autistic, some have ADHD, and most bring high levels of anxiety into the school day.

The role and the setting

Some of these pupils have had difficulty in education before. Confidence is often low, and trust takes time to build. The nurture class gives them a calm, steady start to each day, with a teacher who knows them well and plans around what they can manage.

Classes are small, and the staff ratio is high, so you will have support staff alongside you every lesson. Well-being, confidence, and social skills sit alongside the academic curriculum, and older pupils work towards national qualifications. The site is calm, with space for pupils to take a break when needed. Staff work with each pupil on strategies for whatever gets in the way of their learning, and therapeutic support runs alongside lessons.

You will have time to plan properly for each pupil. You will also see the small steps up close, such as a pupil who joins a group activity for the first time, or reads aloud after weeks of saying no.

This is a permanent post with the school, so you join the staff team from day one and can plan for the long term with your class.

The school is a straightforward commute from Guildford and Reigate.

What you will do

  • Plan and teach a small nurture class, starting from each pupil’s needs and interests
  • Build calm, predictable routines that help anxious pupils feel ready to learn
  • Adapt lessons for autistic pupils and pupils with ADHD
  • Lead the support staff in your class and agree on each pupil’s next steps with them
  • Track progress in small steps and share it with families and colleagues

About you

  • You care about autistic young people and pupils with SEMH needs, and you want relationships to come first in your teaching
  • You hold QTS
  • You stay calm and kind when a pupil is finding the day hard
  • Experience in a specialist school, PRU, nurture group or mainstream inclusion-based setting would suit you well
  • Primary or secondary teachers who have built a strong record with SEND pupils in mainstream are welcome to apply
