Have you ever had a chair go over mid-lesson, and known within seconds whether to raise your voice or drop it? Do you know the difference between a pupil who is about to blow and a pupil who already has, and what changes in how you respond?
If you already read a room by its noise level, not just its silence, this may be the one.
The School
This secondary special school in West London works exclusively with pupils aged 11 to 19 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The behaviour you meet here is more often loud than withdrawn. Every pupil holds an EHCP.
Many pupils arrive carrying difficult experiences of school and gaps in their learning. Instead of relying on exclusions, the school takes a reflective, restorative approach, working with each pupil to understand what happened and how to move forward. Therapeutic support is built into the day alongside teaching, not delivered separately.
Younger pupils are taught in a way that puts routine and relationship first, giving them a predictable structure before anything else is asked of them. As pupils move through the school, that structure gradually opens up, and the focus shifts toward building their independence and confidence across a wider range of settings.
The Role
As a SEMH Teacher, you will plan and deliver personalised lessons that work towards each pupil's EHCP outcomes, knowing that the lesson plan is sometimes the least important thing in the room on a given day. De-escalation is a daily skill here, not an occasional one, and staying calm when a pupil is not taking real practice is built over time rather than picked up overnight.
You will work alongside the wider staff team and therapeutic support around each pupil's needs, building the kind of consistency that lets pupils settle. Some days, the win is a full lesson delivered. Other days, the win is a pupil staying in the room, and knowing which one matters more on any given day is part of the job.
What Is Required
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is required. Solid, direct experience of SEMH is required, and this is non-negotiable. Pupils here may also present with Autism or ADHD alongside their SEMH needs, so experience across all three is genuinely useful, though SEMH experience remains the core requirement.
