SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: Brent, North West London
Pay: £90–£110 per day (PAYE only)
Contract: Full-time | Term-time only | Temporary to Permanent

Can you be the consistent, calm adult who helps a child feel safe enough to learn again?

We are recruiting a SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Brent, supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, primarily across secondary-aged pupils.

Many pupils have experienced disrupted education, trauma, or significant emotional challenges. This school offers a structured, nurturing and relationship-led environment, where emotional regulation, trust and positive connections are prioritised every day.

The Role – SEMH Teaching Assistant
Working closely with class teachers, pastoral staff and therapists, you will support pupils to re-engage with learning and school life through consistent, trauma-informed practice.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs

  • Supporting emotional regulation, behaviour and social development

  • Implementing behaviour support plans, interventions and EHCP targets

  • Using trauma-informed, restorative and de-escalation approaches

  • Supporting pupils during lessons, transitions and unstructured times

  • Building strong, trusting relationships with vulnerable young people

  • Working collaboratively with teaching and pastoral teams

Who This Role Is For
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting children and young people with complex emotional needs.

You will be well suited if you have:

  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, SEN or behavioural needs

  • A background in SEN education, youth work, care or pastoral support

  • A calm, resilient and empathetic approach

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

  • A genuine commitment to inclusion, wellbeing and positive outcomes

This is not a passive classroom role and requires emotional resilience and active engagement.

What’s on Offer

  • £90–£110 per day, depending on experience

  • PAYE only, with a clear temporary to permanent pathway

  • Full-time, term-time only position

  • Ongoing training in SEMH, behaviour support and trauma-informed practice

  • Supportive leadership and an inclusive, child-centred staff culture

  • Long-term progression opportunities within specialist education

Why This Role Matters
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will be a key adult helping pupils rebuild trust, manage emotions and gradually re-engage with learning. Progress may be small at times, but it is meaningful — and your impact will be felt every single day.
