SEMH Teaching Assistant – Camden

Camden, Central London
£95–£110 per day, depending on experience
Full-time | Long-term

I am recruiting an SEMH Teaching Assistant to support young people who need additional help managing the emotional and social demands of school.

This is a role for someone who can remain calm when a pupil is struggling, maintain appropriate boundaries and understand that behaviour often tells you something about what a young person is finding difficult.

You may already have experience within SEND, youth work, mentoring, pastoral support, care or alternative provision.

Your role

You will help pupils remain engaged with learning and develop more effective ways of managing difficult situations.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support

  • Supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs

  • Helping pupils regulate following challenging situations

  • Using calm de-escalation approaches

  • Supporting pupils to return to lessons successfully

  • Encouraging positive routines and engagement

  • Building strong relationships while maintaining clear boundaries

  • Working closely with teachers and pastoral staff

  • Supporting pupils during less structured parts of the school day

What are we looking for?

Essential:

  • Previous experience working with children or young people

  • A calm and emotionally resilient approach

  • Strong relationship-building skills

  • Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries

  • Reliability and consistency

Desirable:

  • SEMH experience

  • Alternative provision experience

  • Youth work or mentoring experience

  • Trauma-informed practice

  • Previous SEND Teaching Assistant experience

Why consider this position?

Some pupils need more than academic support before they can engage successfully with education.

Your ability to remain consistent, recognise when a pupil is struggling and help them return to learning can become an important part of their school experience.
