Contract: Full-time | Long-term
Start Date: ASAP

This is a highly purposeful SEN Autism Teaching Assistant role within a primary school setting in Watford, supporting children with Autism (ASC), non-verbal communication and complex needs. This role goes beyond general classroom support and requires emotional presence, consistency and a strong understanding of how autistic children experience the school day.

You will be working with pupils who rely on predictable routines, calm responses and adults who understand sensory processing and communication differences. Progress in this role is measured through trust, engagement and emotional regulation, alongside academic development.

The role

You will be responsible for:

• Providing 1:1 and small group support for children with Autism and complex needs
• Supporting communication through visual supports, routines and alternative communication strategies
• Helping pupils manage sensory input and regulate emotions throughout the school day
• Working closely with class teachers and the SEN team to follow individualised support plans
• Supporting learning activities at an appropriate pace, celebrating small but meaningful progress
• Responding to dysregulation using calm, consistent and trauma-informed approaches
• Remaining observant, proactive and emotionally attuned across the school day

Who this role is suited to

You are likely to thrive in this role if you:

• Have experience supporting children with Autism, non-verbal communication or complex SEN
• Are proactive, patient and emotionally intuitive
• Remain calm during challenging moments and understand behaviour as communication
• Have an understanding of sensory needs, routines and regulation, or are keen to develop this further
• Value consistency and long-term impact rather than short-term experience
• Are reliable, resilient and committed to building positive relationships

The setting

This is a nurturing and inclusive primary school environment with a strong focus on SEN and autism support. The school prioritises emotional wellbeing, structured routines and clear communication strategies. Staff work collaboratively to ensure children feel safe, understood and supported throughout the school day.

Pay, support and structure

• £90–£100 per day
• PAYE only, no umbrella companies
• Long-term opportunity offering consistency for pupils
• Ongoing guidance and support from an ethical SEND specialist recruitment consultancy

Why this role matters
