What would it take for a young person who has given up on school to open the front door to you on a Tuesday morning?

The pupils in this role are not in a classroom at the moment. They have Autism, ADHD or SEMH needs, and mainstream school has not worked for them. Some have been out of education for months. For many of them, you become the one adult who turns up every week, ready to teach.

I am currently working with a well-established SEN provision that organises outreach services across South West London. They need an SEN HLTA in the Community to plan and deliver one-to-one sessions in pupils' homes and local community settings, such as libraries.

Is This Your Next Role?

If you are an experienced HLTA, you probably already plan lessons, cover classes and know your pupils better than most adults in the building. But you still work to the school timetable, the class plan and the bell. This role hands you the planning. You decide what each pupil learns, how fast, and in what way.

It also suits people who have tutored, mentored or worked in alternative provision and want work that relies on their judgement. It provides valuable experience for anyone heading towards teaching, educational psychology, or family support work.

A Day in the Role

You might start at 9am at a pupil's home, where a 13-year-old with ADHD agrees to twenty minutes of maths if it is built around football scores. By late morning, you could be in a quiet corner of a local library with a pupil with Autism who has started to read aloud to you, something they would not do in a room of thirty. In the afternoon, you write up what changed, plan next week's sessions and speak to a parent who wants to know how it is going. Progress can be slow. When it comes, you are the person who saw it first.

About the Provision and the Pupils

The provision has a long track record of supporting pupils who are not currently accessing mainstream education. Pupils have Autism, ADHD and SEMH needs, and many work below age-related expectations. Some carry anxiety about school that runs deep. The outreach team gives you a clear structure to work within, ongoing training and colleagues to talk to after a difficult session. You work on your own during sessions, but you are never on your own in the role.

The role covers homes and community settings across Kingston and Richmond, so it suits candidates living in or near Twickenham, Surbiton, Teddington or Wimbledon.

What the Role Involves

  • Planning and leading one-to-one sessions for pupils with Autism, ADHD and SEMH in their homes and in community settings
  • Adapting the National Curriculum for pupils working below age-related expectations
  • Building trust with young people who have lost confidence in education, so they keep turning up
  • Working directly with parents and carers to keep sessions consistent from week to week
  • Recording each pupil's progress and sharing it with the outreach team

Who Should Apply

  • You have at least one year of experience working directly with pupils with Autism, ADHD or SEMH
  • You hold HLTA status, or you have clear experience working at that level
  • You are confident in planning and delivering sessions on your own, outside a school building
  • You know the National Curriculum well enough to adapt it for each pupil
  • You are comfortable working in pupils' homes and building relationships with families

Experienced HLTAs, tutors, Learning Mentors, and staff from alternative provision are all well-suited to this role.
