SEN Learning Mentor, Kingston and Richmond
ASAP start, long-term to permanent, full-time, 8:30am to 4:30pm
£110 to £130 PAYE per day, weekly payment
Interviews arranged ASAP
After at least a year working in a school, are you ready to support children with SEN who are not attending one right now?
This SEN Learning Mentor role is with an outreach SEN service covering Kingston and Richmond. You will work with children and young people with SEND who are not currently accessing school.
Your working day is spent in pupils’ homes and in community places, such as a local library. The service supports children of all ages, and their needs include ASC, ADHD, SLCN, MLD and SEMH.
About the school
Children can end up out of school for many different reasons. For some, anxiety has built up over a long time. Others have health needs that make attending hard, or are waiting for a place that suits them.
Whatever the reason, the starting point stays the same. A child needs to trust the adult working with them before learning can move forward. Your first job with any pupil is to become that adult.
Working in a family home asks something different of you. You will get to know parents and carers well, and you will see each child in a place where they feel more like themselves. Some pupils open up more at home. Others find a library or another quiet public space easier.
The role is easy to reach from New Malden or Teddington, and you will travel to different places across Kingston and Richmond.
What you will do
- Meet pupils in their homes and in community places such as libraries
- Get to know each pupil and build a relationship they can rely on
- Help pupils pick up reading, writing, maths and other learning at a pace that suits them
- Support pupils to understand and manage their emotions, and to grow in confidence
- Keep parents and carers informed, and share what you notice with the people around the child
About you
- You care about children with SEND, with a particular interest in SEMH, anxiety or school avoidance
- Essential: at least one full year of experience working in a school
- You accept that progress can be slow, and you value small steps forward
- You are happy to work in different places across Kingston and Richmond
- You might be an experienced TA or HLTA, a learning mentor, someone from alternative provision, or an aspiring teacher
Psychology or education graduates, assistant psychologists, and pastoral staff are also welcome to apply, as long as they have a full year of school experience.
Why apply
This role lets you see a child’s progress up close, in places where they feel safe enough to try again. For many people with school experience, that is the part of the work they value most.
Pay is £130 PAYE per day, paid weekly, with no umbrella company involved. The contract is long-term, with a path to a permanent contract. The experience also carries well into future SEN roles, including teaching, mentoring or educational psychology.
