When a child is still counting on their fingers in Year 5, are you the teacher colleagues come to for ideas?

That instinct for finding the gap in a pupil’s understanding is what this SEN Maths Lead Teacher role in Wandsworth needs. You would lead the planning of maths for the school’s lower-attaining pupils and teach it yourself.

About the school and the children

I am working with a specialist school in Wandsworth for primary and secondary-aged pupils with autism and communication needs. Some pupils also have learning difficulties, and many are working well below age-related expectations in maths. Change and uncertainty can be hard for them, so predictable, carefully sequenced lessons matter.

Progress looks different from pupil to pupil. For one child, it might be recognising coins. For another, it might be a Functional Skills or GCSE pass a few years from now. A strong maths curriculum makes room for both.

Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy advice is available on-site. That helps when a pupil’s communication or sensory needs get in the way of learning.

What you will do as SEN Maths Lead Teacher

  • Lead maths curriculum planning, with a focus on lower-attaining pupils
  • Teach maths to primary-aged pupils working below age-related expectations
  • Break key concepts into small, clear steps that colleagues can teach from
  • Track progress closely and adjust the plan when pupils get stuck
  • Help teachers and support staff teach maths with confidence

About you

  • A genuine interest in autism and how pupils with communication needs learn maths
  • QTS and a proven track record in teaching lower-attaining pupils at the primary level
  • Experience leading maths in some form, such as subject lead, intervention lead or coaching colleagues
  • Confidence in planning a maths curriculum from early numbers upwards
  • Clear, calm communication with colleagues and families

If you have led maths for lower attainers in a mainstream primary, you are welcome to apply, even without specialist school experience.

Leading maths here

This is a leadership role from the start. You would decide how maths is sequenced for pupils who need the smallest steps. You would also help every adult in the classroom teach it the same way. That consistency matters for autistic pupils, who learn best when routines and language stay the same. For an experienced primary teacher ready to step up, this is a subject you would lead, and your decisions would shape every maths lesson in the school.
