You may be teaching secondary maths right now and wondering when you will get the chance to lead it.
This SEN Maths Teacher role is at a specialist school for pupils with autism (ASC), MLD, SLD and speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). You will lead maths for both primary- and secondary-aged pupils across KS1 and KS4 and teach your own classes. It is a permanent post.
Many pupils have complex autism alongside moderate to severe learning difficulties. Maths here has to be practical and visual, and progress often comes in small steps. Classes are small, and the staff-to-pupil ratio is high, so you have adults in the room who can help each pupil take part.
Pupils have speech and language and occupational therapy input. Part of your role is working with therapists and support staff, so the language you use in maths matches how each pupil communicates.
As the lead, you set the direction for maths across the school. That means planning the curriculum so each pupil works at the right level, tracking progress and helping colleagues teach maths with confidence. You decide how maths is taught and assessed, and you are accountable for progress in maths.
The school is a straightforward commute from Wimbledon or Streatham.
What you’ll do
- Lead maths across primary and secondary curriculum and teach your own classes
- Plan the maths curriculum so each pupil has a route that fits, from everyday number skills upwards
- Adapt teaching for pupils with ASC, MLD, SLD and SLCN, using visual and practical approaches
- Track progress and support colleagues to plan and teach maths well
- Work with therapists and support staff so maths links to communication and life skills
About you
- You have QTS
- You have an interest in SEND and in making maths make sense for pupils who find it hard

- The role would suit a maths teacher in a specialist school, or a mainstream maths teacher with SEN or nurture group experience, whether or not you have led a subject before
- If you have taught maths intervention or functional skills groups, that experience counts
