What changes for a child who rarely speaks in class, when the first thing you ask of them is to keep a rhythm going?

This permanent SEN Music Teacher role is 3 days a week at an SEN school in Surrey for pupils aged 7 to 16 with autism, ADHD, and SEMH needs. Many pupils arrive with high anxiety and low confidence. Some have had school experiences that left them wary of trying anything new in front of others.

Music gives these pupils a way in that does not depend on getting the right answer the first time. You will teach music across the school, from younger pupils exploring sound and rhythm to older students working towards GCSE Music.

About the school

Classes are small, usually 6 to 8 pupils, with a SEN Teacher and a Learning Support Assistant in every room. Teachers, support staff, and therapy staff plan together around each pupil’s EHCP. You will know what a pupil finds hard before they walk through the door.

The school is working towards a 1:4 staff-to-pupil ratio in every class. Leaders protect planning time and fund ongoing SEN training, so your specialist skills keep developing.

What a lesson can look like

A group of four or five might start with a shared rhythm, move on to a short piece together, and finish by performing something they made up between them. One pupil might need to sit out and listen for the first ten minutes. You will have an LSA in the room who knows that pupil well, and the freedom to adjust the plan as you go.

Your role

  • Plan and teach music lessons for pupils aged 7 to 16
  • Adapt each lesson to pupils’ needs and EHCP targets
  • Use performance, composition and listening to build confidence
  • Teach GCSE Music to KS4 students who are ready for it
  • Help shape how music is taught across the school

About you

  • A genuine interest in SEND and in what music can do for pupils with autism, ADHD or SEMH needs
  • QTS (essential)
  • Confident teaching music up to GCSE level
  • Able to stay calm and change direction when a lesson needs it
  • Mainstream music teachers ready to move into a specialist setting are welcome to apply

Why this role

You get a permanent contract on three days a week, which leaves two days free for performing or private teaching. Small groups mean you can hear every pupil play. You work with a full classroom team in every lesson, and you have real room to build music provision around these pupils.

The school is an easy commute from Epsom and Guildford.

Enhanced DBS and safer recruitment checks apply to this role.
