Are you an experienced SEN Teacher, Autism Teacher, or Primary/Secondary Teacher looking to transition into specialist education?
A specialist autism school in Merton is seeking a passionate and adaptable SEN Teacher to join their supportive team in September 2026. This is a fantastic opportunity to work in a highly rewarding setting supporting pupils aged 4-11 with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and additional needs including ADHD, speech and language difficulties, sensory processing needs, and behaviours that challenge.

About the School
This specialist provision supports pupils with a primary diagnosis of Autism. Around 70% of pupils are non-verbal, so communication strategies are central to the school’s approach.
The school uses a range of autism-specific interventions and communication systems including:
- TEACCH
- Attention Autism
- Makaton
- PECs
- PODD
- Visual communication and sensory-based learning approaches
Classes are small, highly supported, and designed to provide pupils with a safe, structured, and engaging learning environment where both emotional regulation and academic progress are prioritised.
The Role – SEN Teacher / Autism Teacher
As an SEN Teacher, you will:
- Plan and deliver creative, differentiated lessons tailored to individual learning needs
- Support autistic pupils with communication, sensory, and emotional regulation needs
- Work closely with Teaching Assistants, therapists, and the wider multidisciplinary team
- Use autism-specific strategies and communication systems effectively within the classroom
- Create engaging lessons using sensory, play-based, and curiosity-led learning approaches
- Support pupils with behaviours that challenge using a therapeutic and relational approach
- Build positive relationships that help pupils feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn
Requirements
To be considered for this role, you must:
- Hold QTS or QTLS
- Have previous experience supporting autistic pupils
- Have experience working with non-verbal pupils or alternative communication methods
- Be confident using or learning approaches such as Makaton, PECs, PODD, TEACCH, or Attention Autism
- Be resilient, patient, and adaptable
- Have a genuine passion for SEND and inclusive education
- Be able to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
