SEN Teacher – SEND | Barnet

Barnet, North London
SEN Teacher / SEND Teacher / Special Needs Teacher
Full-time | Term-time

Parker Smith Inclusion is working with specialist and inclusive schools across Barnet looking for experienced and committed SEN Teachers to support pupils with additional needs.

These opportunities suit teachers who want to work in environments where progress is viewed more broadly than academic results alone. For many pupils, success can mean developing communication, becoming more independent, regulating emotions more effectively or beginning to engage consistently with learning.

As an SEN Teacher, you will play a central role in creating that progress.

The role

Depending on the setting, your responsibilities may include:

  • Planning and delivering engaging, appropriately differentiated lessons

  • Teaching individuals, small groups or specialist classes

  • Adapting learning to meet a wide range of needs and abilities

  • Supporting pupils to develop communication, independence and confidence

  • Using individual education plans, EHCP outcomes and assessment information to inform teaching

  • Monitoring progress and adapting approaches where required

  • Creating a structured, predictable and supportive classroom environment

  • Working closely with Teaching Assistants and support staff

  • Contributing to reviews, reports and wider pupil planning

  • Liaising with parents, carers and other professionals where appropriate

  • Maintaining high safeguarding and professional standards

Specific SEND needs and the nature of each setting will always be discussed with you before you are put forward.

What are schools looking for?

Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status or a recognised teaching qualification appropriate to the role

  • Experience teaching children or young people

  • Strong classroom practice and the ability to differentiate effectively

  • A calm, consistent and pupil-centred approach

  • The ability to work collaboratively with support staff and other professionals

  • A strong commitment to safeguarding and inclusive education

Desirable:

  • Previous experience teaching within an SEN or SEND setting

  • Experience supporting pupils with additional needs in a mainstream school

  • Knowledge of EHCPs and personalised learning approaches

  • Experience with autism, complex needs, SEMH, communication needs or other areas of SEND

  • Relevant SEN qualifications or specialist training

Mainstream teachers looking to move into SEND will also be considered where they have relevant experience and a strong understanding of inclusive practice.

Why consider SEN teaching?

SEN teaching can offer the chance to work more closely with pupils and understand exactly what helps them learn.

The progress can look different from one pupil to the next, and teachers often have more opportunity to adapt their teaching creatively around individual strengths, needs and interests.

For teachers who value relationships, consistency and personalised learning, SEND can be an extremely rewarding area of education to work in.
