Parker Smith Inclusion is recruiting a full-time SEN Teacher / Special Needs Teacher to work within a specialist SEND setting in Barnet.

This could be an excellent next move for an experienced SEN Teacher, but we would also like to hear from mainstream teachers who have supported pupils with additional needs and are seriously considering moving into specialist education.

SEND teaching can give you something very different from a traditional classroom: more individualised learning, greater freedom to adapt your approach and the opportunity to understand your pupils exceptionally well.

What does teaching look like in a specialist SEND setting?

You will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging learning while adapting your teaching around the individual needs, communication styles and starting points of your pupils.

Your responsibilities may include:

• Planning and delivering accessible, differentiated lessons

• Teaching pupils individually and within small groups

• Setting meaningful and achievable learning goals

• Adapting lessons when a traditional approach isn't working

• Supporting communication, independence and wider personal development

• Working closely with Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants

• Building positive and consistent relationships with pupils

• Monitoring progress and contributing to individual plans

• Working collaboratively with families and the wider SEND team where appropriate

The teacher we're hoping to meet

Essential:

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised equivalent

• Able to commit to a full-time, Monday–Friday role

• Strong classroom practice

• A flexible and adaptable approach to teaching

• Confidence differentiating learning for individual pupils

• A calm, consistent and reflective approach

• Genuine interest in developing within SEND education

Desirable:

• Previous experience teaching within a special school

• Experience supporting pupils with SEND within a mainstream setting

• Knowledge of autism, learning difficulties or communication needs

• Experience working alongside Teaching Assistants or multidisciplinary professionals

You do not necessarily need years of special-school experience.
