Can you picture the day a teenager who has spent every morning pacing the corridor walks into your classroom and sits down?
Getting there takes weeks of patience, and this SEN Teacher role gives you the time to do it. I am working with a specialist SEND school in West London that needs a qualified SEN Teacher for secondary-aged pupils with Autism (ASC), Moderate Learning Difficulties (MLD) and Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD). Every pupil has an EHCP, and the school would welcome a Special Needs Teacher or Autism Teacher who wants to work in a specialist setting.

A day in your SEND classroom
Your first job each morning is reading the room. One pupil needs to walk a lap of the building before coming in. Another wants the same greeting every day, in the same words. Your Teaching Assistants know these details because you agreed on the plan together.
Mid-morning, you teach money skills with real coins and a pretend shop. One pupil counts to five for the first time without help. Another stays at the table for the whole activity, which, a month ago, was out of reach.
Some days are hard. A pupil may bite or spit when a change comes without warning. You keep everyone safe. Afterwards, you work out with your team what the pupil said. The next day, you plan around it.
The pupils at this special school
The pupils are in KS3 and work at very different stages, from early communication and sensory learning to reading, number and life skills. Some talk freely. Others use symbols, signing, gestures, or behaviour to communicate. Staff here treat behaviour as information, and they share progress with families, however small it may look on paper.
What you will do as a SEN Teacher
- Plan and teach lessons for autistic pupils with MLD and SLD, adapted to each young person's stage
- Use visual timetables, symbols, Makaton and predictable routines to lower anxiety
- Respond safely to behaviours that challenge, including biting and spitting, following each pupil's support plan
- Lead your Teaching Assistants so that every adult uses the same approach all day
- Set and review EHCP targets, and give families clear, honest updates
Who should apply
- Qualified Teachers with QTS (essential)
- SEN Teachers with experience of autistic pupils whose behaviour challenges
- Mainstream secondary or primary Teachers from a resource base or SEND unit who want to specialise
- Teachers who stay steady after a hard day and come back with a new plan
- Teachers with Team Teach or positive handling training, though this is not essential

The school is in West London, within easy reach of Hounslow, Feltham, Twickenham, Staines-upon-Thames, Ashford and Richmond.
