Have you seen a teenager relax the moment the work in front of them finally fits?

I am currently working with a specialist secondary school in North London that needs an SEN Teacher for a complex-needs class from January 2027, or sooner if you are available. Pupils are grouped by learning level, so a Year 7 and a Year 10 can sit at the same table and work on the same next step.

The Class

Your class brings together KS3 and KS4 pupils with complex needs, including learning difficulties and autism. A 15-year-old who is ready for the same reading step as an 11-year-old takes it alongside peers at that level, and nobody is singled out for being behind.

You teach every subject, and every lesson has to respect a teenager’s age. A maths lesson on money might have one pupil matching coins while another works out the change from a shopping trip, both planning the same day out. By the summer term, you might watch a Year 10 student read a bus timetable they couldn’t follow in January.

This role does not involve personal care. Your time in class goes on teaching and on the relationships that help pupils learn.

About the School

This specialist school supports young people with complex needs. Some pupils also find school stressful or struggle socially. Each pupil’s learning is planned around them, with a strong focus on the skills they will use in everyday life after school. Teaching Assistants work in every class, and you direct their support for each pupil.

Teachers get planning time beyond the standard allowance, so you plan for a mixed-age class in school hours. New staff get a full induction and ongoing training.

The school is commutable from Edgware and Hendon.

What You Will Do

  • Plan and teach every subject for a mixed-age KS3 and KS4 class
  • Adapt topics and resources so that early-level content suits teenagers
  • Guide your Teaching Assistants and share your planning with them
  • Build everyday life skills into English, maths and topic work
  • Track small steps of progress against each pupil’s EHC Plan outcomes

About You

  • A genuine interest in teaching young people with complex learning needs and autism
  • QTS
  • Experience teaching pupils with SEND, or a clear wish to build those skills
  • Steady and patient when a lesson needs to change course
  • Primary-trained Teachers and mainstream secondary Teachers ready to move into SEND are welcome

If you have taught across the primary curriculum or worked with a lower-attaining set or a nurture group, you already know much of what this class needs.

If you are in post, the resignation deadline for a January start is 31 October. Get in touch early, and you’ll have time to visit the class before you decide.
