What does a school day feel like for a bright autistic child when nobody has explained what happens next?
If you have taught children with Autism/ASC, you may know the answer from experience. A specialist autism school in Surrey needs an SEN Teacher who can start within the next one to two weeks.
About the role
I am currently working with the school, which teaches pupils in classes matched to their communication and ability. The class you would teach is the higher-ability group, with a curriculum pitched at the upper end of Key Stage 2 and the start of Key Stage 3. These pupils cover much of the curriculum. For many of them, the harder part is the day leading up to the lessons. Transitions, noise and changes to the plan all take effort. You make the lessons work and make the day predictable enough for pupils to apply what they know.
The school is expanding its intake, so you would join as pupil numbers and staffing continue to increase.
What you will do as a SEN Teacher
- Teach a higher-ability class of autistic pupils across the curriculum
- Build routines and visual supports that show pupils what comes next
- Adapt lessons to how each pupil processes language, sensory input and change
- Direct the Teaching Assistants who work in your room
- Track progress against each pupil's EHC Plan outcomes and share them with families and professionals
Personal care forms part of every role in the school, because pupils' needs vary.
Who does this role suit?
You are a Qualified Teacher with QTS and SEN experience. Experience with complex needs autism is preferred. Teachers reach a role like this from several routes:
- Mainstream Teachers who have taught autistic pupils and want to specialise
- SENCOs and SEN leads in mainstream schools who want a full-time specialist class
- Teachers from SLCN, MLD or SEMH settings moving into autism provision
- Teachers returning to the classroom after a career break, with SEN experience behind them
- Anyone with the right to work in the UK
