Do you care about helping someone communicate, even when they use few or no words?

This is a long-term SEN Teaching Assistant role in a specialist school in Kingston upon Thames. The school supports children and young people across a wide age range, from early years to post-16. Pupils have severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and autism (ASC). Many communicate through signs, symbols, objects or sounds rather than speech.

You will work as part of a class team, supporting a small group of pupils through their day. The school is a short trip from New Malden and Chessington.

What you will do

  • Support pupils with learning, play and communication, using signs, symbols and visual aids
  • Provide personal care, including changing and feeding, with dignity and respect
  • Support pupils during hydrotherapy sessions in the pool
  • Help pupils with sensory and physical routines set by the class team
  • Record small steps of progress and share them with the class teacher

About you

  • You want to work with children and young people with SLD, PMLD or autism
  • You are happy to provide personal care and to support in hydrotherapy. These are must-haves for this role.
  • You are patient, calm and observant, and you notice the small changes that show a pupil is happy, unsettled or ready to learn
  • Experience as a TA in a special school or with complex needs would suit you well
  • If you have worked in care, nursery, healthcare or as a carer for a family member, your experience counts here. PSI’s free CPD support can help you build confidence.

Why apply

In this setting, progress looks different. A first sign, a new choice or a calm transition is a big win, and you are part of it every day. You work closely with the class teacher, so you learn practical skills quickly.

The contract starts long term and leads to a permanent role. That gives you stability, the same pupils and the same team, which matters for pupils who rely on familiar faces.
